Manager’s Corner
Susie Chapman

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! We are busy this month getting ready for a new product release. Alchemy 8.0 will add many new features to learn about, so that is keeping us on our toes.

Our crew is busy at work with our MCDST training as well. We all stay one night a week and learn about becoming a better desktop support technician. A special thanks to Gregg Smith, our advisor, for teaching the classes.

Alchemy Tech Note 2004-14

Subject: Installing Alchemy with No drive letter C:

Revision Date: August 20, 2004

Version: Alchemy 7.6 build 225

This is a “How to” Article for installing Alchemy on a machine with no drive letter c:\. You will find this environment where the customer is using “Citrix”.

Resolution is to use the “subst” command.

You need to find what drive letter the customer is using to boot from. For our example, we’ll use driver letter E:.

Open a command prompt and type “subst c: e:”. This will create a virtual drive and Alchemy will install on the E: drive.

In some cases you can then remove the virtual drive by typing “subst c: /d”. If this produces errors when attempting to run Alchemy, you will need to keep the virtual drive.

If the virtual drive is needed for Alchemy to operate, you will need to ensure that the virtual drive is created after every re-boot. One way would be to create a batch file that generates the virtual drive, then save that in the startup or adding that functionality to the autoexec.bat file.
